Wanting to do more than just encourage a new business model to create a better world, I decided to create a fundraising line of chains. Each design would be attached to a specific cause, with the design reflecting the heart of the cause. Half of the proceeds from these chains will go directly to a non-profit organization. The other half pays for production, promotion and overhead expenses.
The first necklace attached to a cause is the limited edition Dilla chain. Growing up in Detroit, I was in the middle of a vibrant hip hop scene. As a promoter of an infamous spot in the D, I can honestly say J Dilla changed my life. Not only did he send us clientele, the artist that he worked with would help shape the culture of our venue.
It was a clear choice for me to dedicate the first endeavor to the J Dilla Foundation along with the Alliance for Lupus Research. You can imagine my excitement when Ms Yancy (Dilla’s mother), aka Ma Dukes, gave me the green light. After all, I could not produce a necklace bearing his name if his family wasn’t behind it.
